Harlem is a neighborhood in the New York City borough of
Manhattan, long known as a major African-American
residential, cultural, and business center. The village was independent of New
York City until 1873. Originally a farming village is best known as the site of
Revolutionary War battles. After the village was united into New York City,
more residents moved there. Many houses were built at once, the market damage
twice — first in the mid 1890s, and again in 1904. Late 19th-century immigrants Jews, Italians, and other ethnic
groups, moved into the neighborhood in large numbers after the first crash.
