Booker T. Washington

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Booker_T._Washington

Booker T. Washington, born in 1856, and died in 1915, was an American educator, author, orator, and political leader. He was the dominant figure in African American community in the United States from 1856 to 1915. In 1881, he was named as the first leader of the new Tuskegee Institute in Alabama. For his contributions to American society, Washington was granted an honorary master's degree from Harvard University in 1896 and an honorary doctorate from Dartmouth College in 1901. In 1895, Washington issued a famous Atlanta Compromise, and it enlarged his influence into the arena of race relations and black leadership. Washington offered black acquiescence in disfranchisement and social segregation if whites would encourage black progress in economic and educational opportunity. In 1901, Washington also consolidated his influence by his autobiography Up From Slavery, is still widely read today.

I think Washington was an intelligent person, and he had a strong mind. He dedicated his whole life for racial relations and black leadership. At that moment, he could stay in the black side, it was rare. I think if I was him, I couldn't do like him. So, I admire him.
