BP #2- Discrimination Research- Parmita

A slave is someone who is owned by another person.

A slave has:

 No choice

No freedom

No money.

A slave has to do what is asked of him by his master, usually this is work of some kind. Slaves are punished for not following their master's orders, working too slowly, or attempting to runaway. When we think of slavery today we think of the black Africans who were captured, sold into slavery and taken to the Americas to work on the plantations there.
Slavery in the United States was part of a long established system of labor exploitation that dates to ancient times. The beginnings of slavery in British North America around 1619.A history on slavery in America and the poor treatment of African slaves by their white owners. The conditions slaves faced depended on the size of the plantation or farm where they worked, the work they had to do, and, of course, the whim of their master. Those who worked the fields with their owner and his family tended to receive better treatment than plantation slaves under an overseer, who was interested only in maximizing the harvest and had no direct investment in their well-being. Household slaves, blacksmiths, carpenters, and drivers were better off than field hands. The cotton gin was invented. It increased the amount of cotton so it helped the slaves out. Later on the slaves became more profitable. It made the slaves the most valuable thing in the nation beside the land itself. Slavery was all over the United States. To whites African Americans were like machines. Slave labor made the production of cotton possible.

A man named Abraham Lincoln(the president at that time) changed the war into a holy war, a fight for freedom. The way of slavery was almost over. The war was over and it was a new day. The Africans Americans were free. Many African Americans set out to look for their loved ones. Some went on to get an education, open up businesses, or they fled the south and returned home.
